Tasting Notes

JamesSuckling.com #19 Top 100 Wines of the USA 2025

A gorgeous cabernet with layers of ripe, dark berry fruit on the nose and palate supported by a bold, lush concentration, with incredible depth and balance. This wine opens with notes of blackberry, black raspberry, and black currant alongside wild chaparral notes of wild violet, fresh mint, and Bay Laurel. Delicate notes of cedar, ground earth, and graphite also support the generous structure, while the richly textured tannins add suppleness and complexity to the mouthfeel. With a lean core of acidity as a backbone, the wine finishes with a linear persistence and focus. Coming from a cooler appellation within Napa, this Cabernet is the definition of finesse. Beautifully drinking upon release, but also age worthy, when cellared properly. Enjoy for many years to come.

“Bold and robust aromas of blackcurrants, mulberries, iodine and graphite. The palate is seamless, with fine tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of cassia bark, blackberry compote, tobacco leaves and cedar. Quite powerful, with underlying freshness and tension. Drink or hold.” – JamesSuckling.com, October 2025

"A beautiful red, with a lush but refined and focused feel to its alluring array of boysenberry, mulberry and blackberry puree flavors. There’s a buried cast iron edge, along with violet and iris accents on the finish, which smolders seductively. A smoky-eye Cabernet. Best from 2027 through 2040." - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, June 18, 2025

    • Technical info
      • Vintage: 2021
      • Volume: 750 mL
      • Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
      • Appellation: Coombsville
      • Brand: Etude Wines
      Vintage Notes
The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity, and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. The resulting crop showed a modest yield with a slightly more compact structure and extract than in previous years.
