Tasting Notes

Each year, our winemakers find a new muse to inspire them – often varieties or vineyards that exceed expectation. This year, a distinctive 2022 growing season resulted in tremendous character from two varietals not often seen in Napa Valley, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Both native to France, the two varietals marry well together in a beautiful blend, with the structure and freshness of Petit Verdot complementing the round juiciness and velvety rich tannins of Malbec.

A lovely bouquet of violet, rose, and lavender aromas perfumes the glass and reflects the regal purple hue of this inspired wine. Beneath the fragrant floral notes is a heart of ripe, red cherry pulsing with strong beats of oak and granite. Concentrated, juicy flavors of blueberry and currant enliven the palate, elegantly restrained by polished tannins that balance their bright, fruity exuberance. Rich yet fresh, this medium-bodied wine highlights the character of 2022 vintage fruit that inspired the winemaking team to make this beautiful red blend in tribute. This is a wine that will age for decades.

      Vintage Notes
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Malbec and Petit Verdot, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.
