Tasting Notes

Vintage 2022 Platinum offers a compelling counterpoint to the powerful 2021 vintage. Where 2021 showed pronounced density, drought-driven concentration, and darker, more opulent tones, the 2022 vintage leans toward lift, polish, and structural precision while delivering the depth expected of Sterling’s highest expression of Napa Valley Cabernet. Described as showing depth, polish, and age-worthy structure, with layered aromas of blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry rise from the glass, accented by violet, cedar, and cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and finely-textured, with concentrated dark fruit framed by polished tannins and a thread of freshness keeping the wine composed and energetic. Notes of mocha, graphite, and subtle baking spice unfold across the mid-palate, leading to a long, focused finish marked by dark berry fruit, savory undertones, and elegant oak presence. Approachable in its youth yet built for development, it captures both intensity and nuance of a highly distinctive Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2025

“So concentrated, nicely tannic and muscular. This is bold and structured, and has a big presence on the palate. Dark cherries, violets, dried blueberries, cocoa and blackcurrants. A reserve-style wine blended from diverse parts of Napa Valley, from valley floor to mountainside sites. Drinkable now, but best from 2029.”

      Vintage Notes
The 2022 growing season in Napa Valley began with welcome winter rainfall to replenish soils after several dry years, followed by a generally moderate spring and summer. Budbreak arrived in March in some areas, with strong shoot growth and average crop levels through the season. August brought warm days and cool nights to support even ripening, but early September introduced a five-day triple-digit heat event accelerating harvest decisions across the valley. Growers who acted quickly and farmed carefully brought in clean, expressive fruit, resulting in wines with concentration, freshness, and distinctive vintage character.
