Vintage Notes
The 2020 season is considered another successful vintage, despite being remembered for factors beyond the typical harvest season. It was a warm, dry winter and the rain and cooler weather didn’t arrive until late Spring. While the mild spring season was a good start, our winery working conditions had extensive safety protocols in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Summer brought cool mornings and very warm days, with strong bud break and flowering. Optimal temperatures and a lack of spring rain and wind produced full clusters with a high juice to skin ratio. Four unusual heatwaves encouraged robust flavor development, allowing a lush and ripe palate to show through on our pinot noir, but then harvest was interrupted by wildfires across California, and we were very fortunate that Santa Barbara County is situated away from any areas affected by the wildfires and our vineyards did not sustain any damage. Yields were slightly lower than average, but grape quality was very good, with optimal flavor development and little to no impact from the statewide heat spikes. 2020 is considered by some as one of the best vintages in Santa Barbara County yet.
